This is one of those discs that I've been meaning to tell y'all about but couldn't until now. The debut from this local band
offers up high-energy vintage flavored R&B with early funk influences built on scratchy guitar, in the pocket beats, and
straight up vocals. The grooves here are organic and, while obviously familiar, the band manages to make them sound and feel
relevant in a way that a lot of today's music can fail to do. Some of the songs are about relationships, sex, et al but they
do branch out with tales of struggling to survive and problems with the police. Though a source within the band told me this
wasn't recorded in the most ideal conditions (Z.A.P.'s music works best in a live setting), many people wouldn't guess from
listening to this album. This band may not play the type of music that some readers of this zine will be into, more adventurous
TTWN readers and those with diverse musical taste should enjoy this disc with no problem. It's a good start from a band I
need to see live more often. (BOONE)
