BUCKETHEAD - "Acoustic Shards" CD
I finally tracked this disc down after almost losing it in the backlog pile we sometimes get here. As the title suggests,
this disc is a collection of acoustic guitar improvisations recorded live with no overdubs in July 1991. What emerges is
tracks that at first veers into gentler, often folk influenced, sonic territory more than the shred
metal tour de forces Buckethead is known for. However, his lead guitar chops do arise and take the listener by surprise
when it happens. Along the way BH's knowledge of various styles ranging from folk to flamenco to an acoustic take on lead
double handed tapping emerge to the listener, showing an ability to do it without stacks of amplifiers or high gain guitar
pickups. These elements have gone on to shock concertgoers when fully plugged in but there is an intimacy here that places
the music in a totally unexpected context. Longtime fans probably already have this but if they don't they should check it
out. (BOONE)
